Computers
I’ve been tumbling deeper and deeper into the rabbit hole of computer obsession since my last birthday (which was back in July) and I’ve come a long way from using Windows XP, Windows Vista, to using Linux (and hopefully in the future, Mac OS X).
I use four computers presently:
My main rig, this laptop was a birthday present. Core 2 Duo, 2 GB RAM, 17 inch, preloaded with Vista.
This was my first laptop, and it’s had a sad, sad life. As you can tell, it’s not in the best of shape. It was fine before I used it. I didn’t treat it very well, and now my conscience haunts me. The hinges are broken, the keyboard is encrusted with god-knows-what, and it has some weird battery issues. The hinges were Dell’s fault: crappy design. After only several months I started seeing cracks in them, and several months later, one of them broke. Couple more weeks, the other broke. And my bitching and whining about it facilitated the purchase of the Inspiron 1525. The battery was also Dells fault. It used to have Windows XP, but now it runs an Ubuntu Minimal Install with Openbox and the like. I tried to wipe the hard drive with DBAN, but it kept hanging, even after trying all the troubleshooting hints. I use it primarily as a torrent slave and test bed for new distros. Celeron, 300-something MB RAM.
IBM NetVista Tower
My Dad bought this computer at one of his company’s auctions for $150. I have no idea what series it is. Pentium IV, 1GB RAM.
With a sticker that says “Built for Windows NT” this is was the oldest computer in the house. I’m not sure of the origins of this one, since my parents bought it a long long time ago, but its been in our house ever since. I remember playing games on it as a kid with Windows 98, so it was one of my first experiences with a computer. Just like the Inspiron 2650, it used to run an Ubuntu Minimal Install, after wiping the hard drive of Windows XP, but now it’s been cannibalized for the IBM Desktop and Tower, the RAM tranplanted and hard drives ripped out. Pentium III, 0 MB RAM.
